Installing Semantic Web Development Environment

Adding SWeDE to an existing Eclipse 3 installation

  1. If you are currently running Eclipse 0.8.6, use these instructions to manually uninstall it before proceeding. To check your SWeDE version, go to Help->About Eclipse Platform, click the Plug-In Details button, and find one of the SWeDE plugins in the list. If you are running version 0.9.0 or later, the installation of the new version will automatically disable the old one.
  2. If you do not already have it, download and install Eclipse 3 from Our local Eclipse mirror.
  3. Download the latest SWeDE Archived Update Site for Eclipse 3 (SWeDE-update-0.9.0.zip or later).
  4. Within Eclipse, select Help->Software Updates->Find and Install...
  5. Select "Search for new features to install" and click Next.
  6. Click the New Archived Site button and locate the ZIP file you just downloaded.
  7. An entry for the ZIP file will appear in the list on the left. Expand it, check the box for SWeDE, and click Next.
  8. Check the box for the SWeDE feature and click Next.
  9. Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
  10. Click Finish.
  11. If Eclipse warns you that the feature is unsigned, click Install to authorize the installation.
  12. Click Yes to restart the workbench when prompted.
  13. If you have Semantic Web projects from a previous version of SWeDE, they may need to be configured to take advantage of added functionality in the new version. In URI Explorer, right-click a project. If the context menu contains an item named Migrate to SWeDE x.x.x, select it, and the project will be updated automatically to take advantage of the new features. If the Migrate option does not appear, the project is already up to date, or the new version of SWeDE does not require project migration.

Installing the SWeDE SDK

If you wish to develop add-ons to SWeDE, you will need to download the SWeDE Software Development Kit. The SDK includes full source code for all of the SWeDE plug-ins, Javadocs for the public APIs, and documentation for the extension points defined for integrating external tools. To install the SDK, follow these steps:

  1. The SDK contains only source code and documentation. If you do not already have it, install the current version of SWeDE before installing the SDK. To verify your SWeDE version, go to Help->About Eclipse Platform. Click the Plug-in Details button and look at the version number for any of the com.bbn.swede plug-ins.
  2. Download the SWeDE SDK Archived Update Site that matches your SWeDE version.
  3. Within Eclipse, select Help->Software Updates->Find and Install...
  4. Select "Search for new features to install" and click Next.
  5. Click the New Archived Site button and locate the ZIP file you just downloaded.
  6. An entry for the ZIP file will appear in the list on the left. Expand it, check the box for SWeDE SDK, and click Next.
  7. Check the box for the SWeDE SDK feature and click Next.
  8. Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. If Eclipse warns you that the feature is unsigned, click Install to authorize the installation.
  11. Click Yes to restart the workbench when prompted.
  12. SDK documentation and instructions for accessing the code via the SWeDE Source plug-in can be found under SWeDE Plug-in Developer Guide in Eclipse help.

Patching SWeDE

  1. Make sure you're running the most recent version of SWeDE. To check this, go to Help->About Eclipse Platform, click the Plug-In Details button, and find one of the SWeDE plugins in the list. If the first three numbers in the plug-in version don't match the latest distribution, download and install it now.
  2. Within Eclipse, select Help->Software Updates->Find and Install...
  3. Select "Search for new features to install" and click Next.
  4. Click the New Archived Site button and locate the SWeDE-patch-<version>.zip file you just downloaded.
  5. An entry for the ZIP file will appear in the list on the left. Expand it, check the box for SWeDE, and click Next.
  6. Check the box for the SWeDE Patch and click Next.
  7. Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. If Eclipse warns you that the feature is unsigned, click Install to authorize the installation.
  10. Click Yes to restart the workbench when prompted.

Installing the SWRL Add-On

  1. Check what version of SWeDE you have installed by selecting Help->About Eclipse Platform and clicking the Plug-In Details button. If the version on the com.bbn.swede plug-ins does not match the latest version on the SWeDE downloads page at http://owl-eclipse.projects.semwebcentral.org/, download and install the latest version now.
  2. Download the latest version of the SWRL add-on (swede-swrl-x.x.x.zip).
  3. Within Eclipse, select Help->Software Updates->Find and Install...
  4. Select "Search for new features to install" and click Next.
  5. Click the New Archived Site button and locate the ZIP file you just downloaded.
  6. An entry for the ZIP file will appear in the list on the left. Expand it, check the box for "SWeDE: SWRL Add-On", and click Next.
  7. Check the box for the "SWeDE: SWRL Add-On" feature and click Next.
  8. Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. If Eclipse warns you that the feature is unsigned, click Install to authorize the installation.
  11. Click Yes to restart the workbench when prompted.
  12. When you switch to the Semantic Web perspective, you should now see SWRL-related actions on the toolbar and in the File->New menu. In all views and perspectives, SWRL documents will have their own icon and launch the SWRL editor when selected.

Removing SWeDE 0.8.6

If you are currently running SWeDE 0.8.6 on your Eclipse 3.0 platform, you must manually remove the old plugins before installing a new version. This is necessary due to some changes to our plugin structure and distribution method and should not be required for future updates. Existing Semantic Web projects already in your workspace will not be affected. To uninstall SWeDE 0.8.6, follow these steps:

  1. Run Eclipse 3.0. Close URI Explorer and any editors currently open for .owl files, and switch to the Resource perspective (Window->Show View->Other...->Resource). Close Eclipse.
  2. Locate your Eclipse installation directory.
  3. Within this directory, open the plugins subdirectory.
  4. Delete the following eleven directories:
    • com.bbn.swede.core_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.editor_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.help_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.library.dumpont_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.library.kazuki_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.library.vowlidator_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.ui.wizards_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.ui_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.view_0.8.6
    • com.bbn.swede.viz_0.8.6
    • org.daml.jena_2.1
  5. Run Eclipse. Select Help->About Eclipse Platform and click the Plug-In Details button. The SWeDE plugins and Jena Library plugin should no longer appear in the list.
  6. You may now proceed with the installation of the new version of SWeDE.

Adding SWeDE to an existing Eclipse 2.1 installation

You need not uninstall an earlier version of SWeDE. Eclipse manages the versions for you

For instructions on using SWeDE, select Help -> Help Contents -> SWeDE User Guide from within Eclipse.
